Does a combined PCV2d–M. hyopneumoniae vaccine improve growth under commercial conditions?
Across three commercial farms, a bivalent PCV2d–M. hyopneumoniae vaccine improved ADG and several health indicators compared with unvaccinated controls.
Across three commercial farms, a bivalent PCV2d–M. hyopneumoniae vaccine improved ADG and several health indicators compared with unvaccinated controls.
Problem: A combination vaccine is most convincingly evaluated under commercial conditions in herds already facing subclinical PCV2d infection and enzootic pneumonia.
Methods: At three farms, 40 piglets per farm were allocated to 20 vaccinated and 20 control pigs at 21 days of age and followed through 175 days.
1. From 70 to 112 days, ADG was 792 versus 688 g/day, 789 versus 668 g/day, and 742 versus 663 g/day on the three farms, respectively, favoring vaccinated pigs.
2. Across 21 to 175 days, vaccinated versus control ADG was 679 versus 622, 677 versus 611, and 658 versus 628 g/day, with several comparisons also showing reduced lesions and lower pathogen measures in vaccinated pigs.
3. The trial supports the effectiveness of this specific vaccine in these three herds but should not be automatically generalized to every bivalent vaccine or every disease setting.
